One of these assholes savaged one of our ducks earlier this year. The ducks are in a large 6-sided box at night, surrounded by a 3' tall welded wire pen. The raccoon got in the pen and then managed to reach over the fine mesh hardware cloth that goes 18" up on the sides of the box and down to get a hold of one of our girls. I assume he held on while ripping chunks of flesh off with the other hand... She finally got loose of it, but she was a mess and I ended her suffering in the morning. Still have 4 of 5 several months later , thankfully.

So far mine haven’t figured out bungee cords. Maybe Canadian raccoons are smarter.

Fuckers attacked our chicken s last night. My own damn fault for not turning on the electric fence... We had one hen with chicks and she put up a fight, I wasnt able to get a shot off at the masked bandit, but I did run it off in person thanks to mama hen’s squaks and fighting... I’m not sure she’s gonna pull through, but all her chicks survived. I’ve seen chickens survive some pretty gnarly attacks, so h op efully she makes it.

I didn’t know they were nuisance predators.

LOL, doubt it - bungees are probably a way better solution than the lock they used.

Sorry to hear about your duck.   The story doesn’t surprise me, they are not nice animals.

She's still with us... She doesnt seem to be able to lift her head, not sure if she's got a torn tenden, or a broken neck, or what... But she still walks (not well) and has all nine chicks gathered up for the night... She's a tough bird. The electric net is on tonight, so it the racoon comes back to try to finish the job he's gonna get a zappy surprise.

I suppose any meal of opportunity . Foxes and coyotes... and I guess raccoons like sneaking into hen houses.

The big difference between a fox/coyote and a racoon is that the racoon can (and will) open door latches, untie knots, and/or break windows to get in, and once it knows there’s food there it will be back every night for more. The electric fence is a good deterrent, but you slip once (like I did) and they will know, since they test the fence regularly to check if it’s still on. They ’re annoying and can cost you a lot of chickens, but there’s no denying the little bastards are smart, and thorough.
